I bargained with life for a penny,
and Life would pay no more,
however I begged at evening
when I counted my scanty store.
For you see Life is a just employer,
It will pay you what you ask,
but once you've set the wages,
it's you that must bear the task.
I had worked for a menials hire,
only to learn dismayed,
that whatever wage I had bargained with Life,
Life would have willingly paid!
